Wheats would like to announce our new 1stXV Captain James Fisher for the 2022/23 season. Fishy has been a constant in the Wheats team over the last few years and always leads by example. He takes over from Liam McCrea who will still be a massive leader in the side.
James Fisher - First I’d like to thank Liam for being a great captain over the past few seasons. I’m honored to be offered the captaincy and can’t wait to get the season started Saturday. UP THE WHEATS!
Liam McCrea - It's been a great honour to captain Wheats for the last 5 years. With an eye on the future, the time is right for a new captain and Fish was the natural choice. He has the full support of the players and I have no doubt he will do a great job.
Coach Josh Loach Smith - Liam has been an exemplary 1st XV captain over the past 5 season, leading the club through highs and lows, last season he played a huge role in allowing me to settle at the club so quickly and always offered me advice and guidance around key issues. Liam will remain a key part of the wheats family and is always a name first on the team sheet when available.
This season sees a change at Wheats, promotion last season, some interesting things materialising behind the scenes thanks to Wrighty, Dean and Craigy and now it’s time for a change on the field. Fish was a standout candidate to be the new 1st XV captain. The standards he sets on and off the field are exemplary and ones that the younger players coming through need to aspire too. He won’t bring the Wynn Jones style speeches, but will lead from the front with the support of our other senior players in the squad.
Fishy’s first game as skipper ended in a bonus point WIN v Manor Park in the first game of the season.
